YouTube thumbnail size and specs

YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 px: a 16:9 image at least 640 px wide and no larger than 2 MB (JPG, PNG or GIF). Thumbnails show up tiny in search and on phones, so your title has to stay readable at about 200 px wide.

What makes a thumbnail easy to read

  • Three to five words at most, in big letters with an outline or shadow.
  • Strong contrast between text and background: pick a palette whose colors stand apart.
  • A face or object in close-up, filling about a third of the frame.
  • A clear bottom-right corner: YouTube puts the video length there (yellow guide in the preview).

The white guide marks a comfort zone. Keep key text inside it so edges are not cropped on some thumbnails.

Using your own photo

Click the “+” frame in a template to pick a photo from your device, then zoom and shift it inside the frame. Turn on “Circle” for an oval crop. Your photo stays in your browser and is never uploaded. When you are happy, download the thumbnail as a JPG (light, easy to keep under 2 MB) or a PNG.

3 real-life examples

1

A challenge video

“Shock” template, Sunset palette: “I tried 7 days with no sugar” in big white letters with a dark outline, a “New” badge and your photo on the right.

2

A product face-off

“Versus” template: two photos side by side and a big “VS” in the middle. The short title on top fits in two words, such as “iPhone or Android”.

3

A how-to video

“Tutorial” template: gradient background, big icon, the title “Learn Excel in 10 minutes” and a “Beginner” badge. At 200 px wide the title still reads.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9, with a 2 MB maximum file size. The minimum accepted width is 640 pixels.
What file type should a YouTube thumbnail be?
JPG, PNG or GIF. JPG is the lightest, so it is the safest way to stay under 2 MB. PNG is crisper on text but heavier.
Where does YouTube show the video length?
In the bottom-right corner of the thumbnail. Keep that area free of text, or the timestamp will cover your title or face.
Can I add my own photo?
Yes. Add an image from your device, then zoom and shift it inside the frame. It never leaves your browser while you design.
How many words should a thumbnail have?
Three to five words is plenty. Thumbnails display small on phones, so longer text becomes unreadable.
