Remove the background from an image

Drop in your image, click the background with the eyedropper and set the tolerance: every area of that color becomes transparent. Then touch up with the eraser or the restore brush and download a transparent PNG. It works best on plain backgrounds and runs entirely in your browser.

How the background is removed
The tool compares every pixel with the color you picked using the eyedropper. The distance between two colors is measured in red-green-blue space:
\[ \text{distance} = \sqrt{(R_{1} - R_{2})^{2} + (G_{1} - G_{2})^{2} + (B_{1} - B_{2})^{2}} \]
A pixel whose distance is below the tolerance becomes transparent. Between the tolerance and the tolerance plus softness, transparency is partial, which gives a smooth edge. With "connected background only" on, just the background linked to the borders or to your click is removed, so a same-colored area inside the object (the white of an eye) stays.
The tool does not recognize people or objects; it removes a color. It gives excellent results on plain backgrounds (studio shots, products on white paper, logos, signatures) and limited results on a busy photo scene.
Setting the tolerance
| Situation | Suggested tolerance | Softness |
|---|---|---|
| Logo or drawing on pure white | 5 to 10 | 10 to 20 |
| Product photo on a white backdrop | 15 to 25 | 20 to 30 |
| Photo with a soft shadow on the backdrop | 30 to 45 | 30 to 50 |
| Gradient or textured background | go over it with the eraser | 20 |
Too low and a halo of background remains. Too high and the tool bites into the object if it is a similar color. In that case turn on "connected background" and finish with the eraser and the restore brush.
Choosing the export format
The result is a PNG with an alpha channel, the only universal way to keep transparency. Do not re-save it as a JPG, which would replace the transparency with a solid color. To make the file smaller, convert it to a transparent WebP with the image converter.
- The working size is capped at 2,000 px on the longest side to stay smooth, even on a phone.
- "Trim" removes the transparent margins around the object.
3 real-life examples
A product photo on a white backdrop
Click the white, set tolerance 20, softness 25, connected background on. Most of the image turns transparent and the faint shadow under the item disappears. Trim on export and the PNG holds just the product.
A scanned signature
A black signature on off-white paper: eyedropper on the paper, tolerance 35. The paper vanishes and the ink stays black, ready to drop onto a document.
A portrait on a blue studio backdrop
Eyedropper on the blue, tolerance 30. Some blue is left between strands of hair; one pass of the eraser cleans it up, and the restore brush fixes a bit of shoulder that was erased by mistake.
