How to enter your menu

In the “Dishes and prices” box, a line that starts with # creates a section (Starters, Mains, Desserts). Each line after it is a dish, with three parts separated by a vertical bar:

Dish name | Description | Price

The description is optional, so “Coffee and sweets | 9.50” works too. The text size adjusts by itself so everything fits on the page.

The PDF is generated at 300 dpi. Print it at actual size on heavy paper (65 lb cover or more), or laminate it so it survives spills.

Tips for a menu people can read

  • Six to eight dishes per section at most: past that, guests stop reading.
  • Prices without dollar signs: “24.00” looks cleaner than “$24.00” repeated on every line.
  • A short description with the main ingredient and how it is cooked.
  • Add an allergy note in the footer, which is good practice and expected by guests.

3 real-life examples

1

A neighborhood bistro

“Bistro” template, Earth palette: three centered sections, serif dish names, italic descriptions, colored prices. Nine dishes fit on one letter page without shrinking the type to the minimum.

2

A daily special card

Half letter, “Minimal” template: a single “Today’s special” section, three dishes and a bundle price in the footer: “Appetizer + entree or entree + dessert: $22”.

3

A coffee shop menu

“Cafe” template with the coffee cup icon: hot drinks, cold drinks, pastries. The rounded font and light background set a relaxed mood.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a restaurant menu?
Group dishes into sections (starters, mains, desserts), put the name first, add a short description, then the price. Keep price formatting consistent.
What size should a restaurant menu be?
US letter (8.5 × 11 in) is the most common for a full menu. Half letter (5.5 × 8.5 in) suits a daily special or a placemat insert.
Should I list prices with a dollar sign?
Many upscale menus skip it for a cleaner look. Just make sure customers can clearly tell the prices are in dollars.
Do I need to list allergens?
It is good practice to add a note asking guests to tell the server about allergies. Rules vary by state, so check with your local health department.
How do I print the menu?
Open the PDF and print at actual size on heavy paper. A print shop can also laminate it or fold it into a booklet.
