Where does lorem ipsum come from?
Lorem ipsum is filler text that designers and developers have used for decades. Its words come from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise written by Cicero in 45 BC, scrambled until no sentence makes sense. It spread in the 1960s on Letraset dry-transfer sheets and later in desktop publishing software.
Why use it? Readable copy pulls the eye and skews feedback on a layout. Lorem ipsum has a letter distribution close to real text, but nobody tries to read it.
How much placeholder text do you need?
The right amount depends on what you are mocking up. These rules of thumb reproduce the density of a real page:

Limits and good practice
Replace every bit of placeholder text before launch: a live page filled with lorem ipsum can be treated as low value by search engines. When testing a multilingual site, also try real copy in each language, because German or Finnish words run longer and can break a layout. This generator caps output at 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 5,000 words or 100 list items.
