How the tree builds itself

You never place cards by hand. The tool works out each person's generation: people with no parents entered sit at the top, their children right below, and so on. A couple always stays side by side, and children sit under their parents with siblings grouped together.

\[ \text{a child's generation} = \text{the lowest parent's generation} + 1 \]

A spouse from outside the family is placed on the same generation as their partner. The cards are then reordered so the connecting lines cross as little as possible.

Which poster size should you choose?

PeopleGenerationsSuggested size
up to 153Letter
15 to 404Tabloid, landscape
40 to 80518 × 24 in

The more people, the smaller the cards: on 18 × 24 in, names stay readable from about three feet away.

Gathering your information

  • Start with yourself, then go up: parents, grandparents, great-grandparents.
  • Write names as on official records (birth name) with dates like "1938–2015".
  • For remarriages, give each spouse their own card and link the children to both parents.

Photos are optional and stay on your device while you design.

3 real-life examples

1

A four-generation family

The default example has 13 people: two sets of grandparents, two children with their spouses, three grandchildren and one great-grandson. It fits on a Tabloid sheet in landscape.

2

A three-generation gift

Your parents, siblings, you and your kids: 10 people on Letter portrait, "Botanical" design, with a photo on each card.

3

A big family reunion

Five generations and 60 people on an 18 × 24 in poster: have it printed for the reunion so cousins can find their branch at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a family tree for free?
Enter the people and their relationships: the layout and the preview are free. Downloading the high-definition poster without the watermark is a one-time payment.
How many generations can I include?
There is no hard limit, but the tool is built for 3 to 5 generations and up to 80 people. Beyond that, the cards get too small for a poster.
How do I add a spouse or children?
Under each person, use "+ spouse" or "+ child": the new card is created with the links already filled in. You can also pick the father, mother and spouse from the lists.
Can I save my tree to finish later?
Yes, it is saved in your browser after every change on this device. If you clear the site's data or switch computers it won't be there, so download it when it's done.
Is my family data uploaded to the internet?
No. Names, dates and photos stay in your browser while you build the tree.
