What each case style does
Here is how the sentence "the lord of the rings is a BOOK" looks in each mode:
| Mode | Result | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Uppercase | THE LORD OF THE RINGS IS A BOOK | every letter capitalized |
| Lowercase | the lord of the rings is a book | every letter in lowercase |
| Sentence case | The lord of the rings is a book | capital after . ! ? and at the start |
| Title Case | The Lord of the Rings Is a Book | capitals on main words, small words stay lowercase |
| Capitalize Each Word | The Lord Of The Rings Is A Book | capital on every word, no exceptions |
| Alternating | tHe LoRd Of… | one lowercase letter, one capital, repeated |
Title case rules for headlines
Most US style guides, including AP and Chicago, capitalize the first and last word and every main word: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns. Short articles ("a", "an", "the"), coordinating conjunctions ("and", "but", "or") and short prepositions ("of", "in", "on", "to") stay lowercase unless they come first or last.
title case = capitalize every word except a, an, the, and, but, or, for, of, in, on, to, at, by (when not first or last)
Style guides disagree on prepositions longer than four letters, such as "with" or "from". This converter keeps the common short list lowercase, so always give a headline a final read before publishing.
camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case
Programmers use these formats to turn a phrase into a variable, file or URL name. The tool removes accents and spaces. Example with "total price with tax":
| Format | Result | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| camelCase | totalPriceWithTax | JavaScript, Java, Swift |
| PascalCase | TotalPriceWithTax | classes, components |
| snake_case | total_price_with_tax | Python, Ruby, SQL columns |
| kebab-case | total-price-with-tax | URLs, CSS classes |
| CONSTANT_CASE | TOTAL_PRICE_WITH_TAX | constants, environment variables |
3 real-life examples
Text typed with Caps Lock on
You typed "HI, I WOULD LIKE TO BOOK A TABLE FOR TWO." by accident. Sentence case turns it into "Hi, I would like to book a table for two." with no retyping.
A blog post headline
"how to save for a down payment in 5 steps" becomes "How to Save for a Down Payment in 5 Steps" in title case: "to", "for", "a" and "in" stay lowercase in the middle, every other word gets a capital.
A variable name
To name a variable from "number of unique visitors", camelCase gives numberOfUniqueVisitors and snake_case gives number_of_unique_visitors.
