📌 Key facts

  • A t-shirt print area is 8 × 10 inches, about 20 × 25 cm.
  • An 11 oz mug print area is 8.25 × 3.5 inches, about 21 × 9 cm.
  • A 300 dpi t-shirt design is 2400 × 3000 pixels.
  • An 11 oz mug holds about 325 ml, or 11 fluid ounces.
  • A transparent PNG lets you place the artwork on any product color.

What the mockup does

A mockup places your artwork on a product so you can judge the result before ordering or listing it in a shop. Here the artwork is slightly warped to follow the material: a light fabric effect on the shirt and a true cylinder curve on the mug, where the edges of the design tighten like they do on a real cup.

Print areas and sizes

T-shirt, front8 × 10 in2400 × 3000
11 oz mug, wrap8.25 × 3.5 in2475 × 1050

These areas are common among print-on-demand services, but every platform has its own limits: check your provider’s template before uploading. Keep text inside the purple guide.

Pick the color and contrast

  • Light garment: dark artwork. Dark garment: white or light artwork.
  • The artwork background is transparent by default, so only the product color shows behind it.
  • Avoid very fine gradients for screen printing; direct-to-garment printing handles them well.
  • For a mug, a wide, short design (about 2.4:1) fills the surface best.

T-shirt mockup: why test before you print

A mockup shows your artwork on the product before you order. So you see the real look, with the curve of the mug and the folds of the fabric.

First, it prevents costly errors. Text that is too small or off-center stands out right away. Next, a mockup helps you sell an idea, because a client sees the final result.

  • For a gift, preview the shirt before you order it.
  • For a store, show the product with no stock on hand.
  • If the artwork falls flat, change it in seconds.

Finally, keep the artwork file so you can send it to the printer.

Print areas for the t-shirt and the mug

Each product has its own print area. The table lists the sizes you need.

ProductPrint areaFile at 300 dpi
T-shirt8 × 10 in2400 × 3000 px
11 oz mug8.25 × 3.5 in2475 × 1050 px

So wide artwork fits a mug, while tall artwork fits a t-shirt. Also, a mug curves, and the edges of the design turn out of view. Therefore, keep key text near the center, away from the sides.

Pick the product color and the artwork color

Contrast decides how well the design reads. On a white mug, dark artwork reads clearly. In contrast, on a navy t-shirt, white or gold artwork pops.

For example, yellow text on white nearly vanishes. So always test two or three product colors before you decide.

  • For a dark product, use light artwork.
  • For a light product, use dark artwork.
  • If you add a photo, check that it stays sharp when enlarged.

Also, limit the design to three colors. A simple design prints better and often costs less.

Product ideas and common mistakes

A mockup fits many uses. For example, build a team t-shirt, a gift mug or a product for your online store.

  • For a team, add the name and the year.
  • For a gift, add a short phrase and an icon.
  • For a store, test several product colors.

However, a few mistakes come up often. First, tiny artwork looks lost. Next, a low-resolution image turns blurry. Finally, many people forget the transparent background and keep a white box.

To build your brand, design a logo, then announce the product with an Instagram post or a YouTube thumbnail.

3 real-life examples

1

A team t-shirt

T-shirt format, “Team” template: “WILDCATS” in big capitals, a gold rule and “EST. 2026”. Shirt color: navy. The artwork file is 2400 × 3000 px.

2

A gift mug

Mug format, “Medallion” template: a circle with the heart icon and “Thanks Mom” in capitals. The mug curve tightens the ends of the circle slightly.

3

A photo tee

“Round photo” template: your photo cropped to an oval with a script caption under it. Choose a white shirt so the photo stands out without a background.
