What the spell checker looks for
Checking happens in two steps:
- While you type, quick rules run in your browser: double spaces, repeated words, a space before a comma, a missing space after a period, a lowercase letter starting a sentence, a lowercase "i", "could of" instead of "could have", and a list of very common misspellings ("definately", "recieve", "alot").
- When you click Check, a full grammar checker reviews spelling, grammar, verb agreement, commonly confused words (their/there/they're, its/it's, your/you're) and style.
Each issue comes with an explanation, an excerpt from your text and one-click fixes. Your browser also underlines unknown words as you type.
Common mistakes in American English
| Mistake | Correct | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| alot | a lot | Always two words |
| could of | could have | It sounds like "of" because of the contraction could've |
| your welcome | you're welcome | Say it out loud as "you are welcome" |
| its / it's | its tail / it's raining | it's always means "it is" or "it has" |
| their / there / they're | their car / over there / they're late | Possession, place, "they are" |
| recieve | receive | I before E, except after C |
Limits and privacy
- Size: 8,000 characters per check, roughly 1,300 words. Split longer texts.
- Quota: about 40 checks every 10 minutes per connection.
- Accuracy: an automatic checker doesn't understand everything. Always proofread, especially names, technical terms and wordplay.
- Privacy: the quick rules stay in your browser. For the full review, your text is passed to a grammar-checking service while it is analyzed, and Outilix doesn't save it. Avoid pasting highly sensitive information.
