Convert a PDF to an editable Word document

Drop your PDF and click Convert: the tool reads the text on every page, rebuilds lines, paragraphs, headings, and bullet lists, and creates a Word (.docx) file you can edit. It all runs in your browser with no upload. Scanned PDFs that contain only images can't be read, because that would need OCR.

How the tool rebuilds your document
A PDF doesn't store paragraphs: it places each piece of text at exact coordinates. The tool reassembles them in four steps.
- Lines: text pieces at the same height are joined left to right. A wide gap becomes a tab.
- Headings: a short line set at least 1.3 times larger than body text becomes a heading.
- Paragraphs: a gap larger than 1.5 line spacings, or a short line ending in a period, starts a new paragraph.
- Lists: lines that start with a bullet (•, -, *) become a bulleted list.
\[ \text{heading if line size} \geq 1.3 \times \text{body text size} \]
What converts and what doesn't
| PDF element | Result in Word |
|---|---|
| Text, headings, bullet lists | Kept and editable |
| Page breaks | Kept (one PDF page = one Word page) |
| Tables | Tab-separated text, no borders |
| Images and logos | Not included |
| Scan with no text | Rejected with a message (OCR needed) |
| Fonts and colors | Word's default font |
For an exact copy of the layout, keep the PDF and use a PDF editor instead.
Prepare your PDF
- Test first: if you can select text with your mouse in a PDF viewer, it will convert.
- For a PDF with hundreds of pages, extract just the pages you need with the Split PDF tool.
- After converting, review headings and paragraph breaks, especially in two-column documents.
3 real-life examples
A resume received as a PDF
A one-page resume with your name at 24 pt and body text at 11 pt: the name becomes a heading \( (24 \geq 1.3 \times 11 = 14.3) \), jobs become paragraphs, and bullets become lists. You can edit it in Word in a few minutes.
A 30-page course packet
You convert all 30 pages: the Word file has 30 page breaks, one per PDF page. Chapter titles are preserved and you can copy useful passages into your notes.
A scanned receipt
The PDF came from a scanner and holds only an image. The tool detects that, shows "No text found", and doesn't produce an empty Word file. You would need OCR software.
