Redact a PDF (permanent removal)

To redact a PDF, drop it in, draw boxes over anything that must be hidden, or search a word to black it out everywhere. When you apply, each redacted page turns into an image with the black areas, then the PDF rebuilds, so the hidden text no longer exists in the file. It all runs in your browser.

📌 Key facts
- Redacting a PDF with this tool truly removes the hidden content instead of covering it with a box.
- Each redacted page becomes a 200 dpi image with the black areas, then the PDF is rebuilt.
- You can draw boxes or search a word and black it out on every page.
- Only affected pages turn into images, and the other pages copy over unchanged.
- The title, author and keywords stored in the PDF are cleared, and the file can grow in size.
- Everything runs in your browser, and no file is uploaded.
Why a black box is not enough
In many PDFs, a black rectangle drawn over text does not delete it: the text stays in the file and can be copied or found by a viewer. This mistake has exposed confidential documents more than once.
This tool works differently: the page is rasterized (turned into a 200 dpi image) with the black areas painted in, and a new page is built from that image. The original text, fonts and layers are not in it anymore.
redacted page = page image + black areas, with no hidden text
How to use it
- Draw boxes on the page shown, or type a word (name, number, address) and click "Find and black out": every match on every page is located.
- Review each page with ◀ ▶ and remove any extra box.
- Apply: only the affected pages are converted; the others are copied as they are.
| Sensitive data | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Name | Header, signature, footer |
| Bank account and card numbers | Tables, statements |
| Address, phone number | Contact blocks, letters |
| Social Security number | Pay stubs, forms, tax papers |
Before you share the file
The title, author and keywords stored in the PDF are cleared. Still check every page in the preview before sending it: a name can also hide in an image or a stamp, which text search cannot see. Redacted pages are images, so the file can get larger.
How to redact a PDF in seven steps
To redact a PDF without mistakes, follow this order. Each step is quick.
- First, drop your PDF into the tool.
- Next, scan each page for sensitive data.
- Then draw a box over each item, or type a word to search.
- After that, step through the pages with the arrows.
- If a box does not belong, remove it.
- Then click Apply.
- Finally, download the redacted file.
So you control every area before the page changes. When you search a word, the tool finds it everywhere. That saves time on a long file.
What to redact in each type of document
Every paper hides different details. This table helps you miss nothing when you redact a PDF.
| Document | What to hide | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Bank statement | Account number, routing number, balances | Header and tables |
| Pay stub | Social Security number, pay rate | Employee block |
| Lease | Address, phone number, signature | First and last page |
| Medical form | Patient name, date of birth, ID number | Top corner |
| ID copy | License number, photo, address | Front and back |
For example, for a rental application, hide the Social Security number and the photo. However, keep the income figures if the landlord needs them.
Mistakes that leak data when you redact a PDF
A failed redaction exposes data. So avoid these traps.
- Drawing a black box in another app: the text stays underneath. Here the page rebuilds, so the text disappears.
- Missing small spots: check footers and watermarks too.
- Searching one spelling only: try variants such as Martin and MARTIN.
- Skipping the review: open each page before you apply.
- Ignoring pictures: word search cannot read text inside a photo. Draw a box by hand instead.
- Overwriting the original: keep it in a separate folder. Then you can start over.
Also, never send the original by mistake. Name the safe copy clearly, for example lease-redacted.pdf.
After you redact a PDF: check and share
Open the final file and try to select the text under a black area. Nothing should come out. Next, use your PDF viewer's search to retype a hidden word. No match should appear. Finally, look at the file size. Image pages weigh more, so shrink the file with Compress PDF if needed.

3 real-life examples
Hide an account number on a statement
Draw a box over the account number on page 1. After you apply, copying that area gives nothing: the number no longer exists in the file.
Anonymize a name across 20 pages
Type "Martin" and click "Find and black out". The tool adds 14 areas on 9 pages. You review them, then apply, and only those 9 pages are converted.
Prepare paperwork for a rental application
Hide the Social Security number and the photo on a document before sending it to the landlord.
