How to edit PDF text without changing the font

A PDF is not a word processor file: each line sits at exact coordinates with a font, a size and a color. This tool reads that information from the file itself.

  1. Click a line of text: it becomes editable in its exact place, shown in the document's real font.
  2. Type your fix. Enter confirms the line, Esc cancels, and Undo goes back up to 80 actions.
  3. Apply: the old text is deleted from the page content (it is not left hidden underneath), then the new text is written with the same font, size and color.
  4. Check the preview of the final file, then download.

size = height of the text matrix · color = last fill color set before the text

What if a letter is missing from the font?

PDFs often embed only the letters that are actually used (a font "subset"). If you type a letter that is not there, the tool works through these steps:

CaseWhat happens
Every letter exists in the PDF's fontSame font, reused as is (identical look)
A full TrueType font can be recoveredFont rebuilt and embedded, with a message
Letter not foundClosest standard font (sans serif, serif, typewriter, bold, italic), with a warning

The final message tells you exactly what was used, so you never discover a font change afterwards.

Adding text, shapes and images

The tools at the top add items over the page: free text (3 standard fonts), rectangles, a translucent highlighter, PNG or JPG images, and an eraser that covers an area with the background color. Each item moves with the ✥ handle and is removed with ✕. Note that the eraser and rectangles cover what is below without deleting it. To erase sensitive data for good, use the redaction tool.

3 real-life examples

1

Fix a date on an invoice

You click "09/12/2026" and type "09/21/2026". The digits already exist in the PDF's font, so the tool reuses them: the look is identical and the old date is gone from the file.

2

Change a name in a document

"Durand" becomes "Dupont": the letter "p" is not in the embedded font. The result is written in the closest standard font and a message tells you, so you can keep it or start over.

3

Mark up a quote

You add "Approved" in green, highlight the total in yellow and drop your signature as a transparent PNG at the bottom of the page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really edit text in a PDF for free?
Yes, for PDFs that hold real text (not scans). Click the line, type your fix and apply: the old text is removed and the new text is written in the same font, size and color when possible.
How do I edit a scanned PDF?
A scan is an image with no text. Run it through the OCR tool first to get a text layer, or cover an area with the eraser and add your own text.
Why does the font sometimes change after editing?
A PDF often contains only the letters already used. If you type a missing letter, the tool rebuilds the font when it can, otherwise it uses the closest standard font and warns you in the final message.
Is the old text really deleted?
Yes: it is removed from the page content stream, so it is no longer selectable or searchable. In rare cases (text inside a nested object) it is only covered, and the tool tells you.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Reading, editing and saving all happen in your browser. The file never leaves your device.
