The 12 zodiac signs and their dates
The tropical zodiac splits the year into 12 parts of 30 degrees, counted from the spring equinox. The dates below are the usual ones; the exact hour the Sun changes sign shifts from year to year.
| Sign | Dates | Element | Ruler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mar 21 – Apr 19 | Fire | Mars |
| Taurus | Apr 20 – May 20 | Earth | Venus |
| Gemini | May 21 – Jun 20 | Air | Mercury |
| Cancer | Jun 21 – Jul 22 | Water | Moon |
| Leo | Jul 23 – Aug 22 | Fire | Sun |
| Virgo | Aug 23 – Sep 22 | Earth | Mercury |
| Libra | Sep 23 – Oct 22 | Air | Venus |
| Scorpio | Oct 23 – Nov 21 | Water | Pluto |
| Sagittarius | Nov 22 – Dec 21 | Fire | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Dec 22 – Jan 19 | Earth | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Jan 20 – Feb 18 | Air | Uranus |
| Pisces | Feb 19 – Mar 20 | Water | Neptune |
How the rising sign is calculated
The rising sign (ascendant) is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It depends on three things: the time, the date and the place. The tool converts your local time to universal time (using the daylight saving rules of the era), finds the local sidereal time, then the ecliptic longitude of the eastern horizon.
\[ \text{ascendant} = \operatorname{atan2}(\cos(\text{LST}) \,;\, - (\sin(\text{LST}) \times \cos(\varepsilon) + \tan(\text{latitude}) \times \sin(\varepsilon))) \]
LST is local sidereal time in degrees and ε is the obliquity of the ecliptic (about 23.44°). The Sun is computed with a formula good to 0.01°. Houses, the Moon and the other planets are not computed, so this is a simplified chart.
Why birth time matters
The sky turns 360° in about 24 hours, so a new sign rises roughly every 2 hours. Two people born on the same day at different times have different rising signs.
| Born in Paris, March 20, 2026 | Rising sign (approx.) |
|---|---|
| 6:07 UTC (sunrise) | Aries 4° |
| 12:00 UTC | Cancer |
| 18:00 UTC | Libra |
| Midnight UTC | Sagittarius |
If you do not know your birth time, use your sun sign alone: it is valid all day, except on the days when the Sun changes sign.
3 real-life examples
Born March 15, 1990
March 15 falls between February 19 and March 20: Pisces, a mutable water sign ruled by Neptune. The Sun was at about 24° Pisces.
Born in Paris on March 20, 2026 at sunrise
The Sun sits on the Pisces-Aries line (the equinox is at 14:46 UTC). At 6:07 UTC it is still in Pisces at 29°38′. The rising sign is Aries: the point of the ecliptic rising at that moment is about 4° Aries.
Born August 15, 2000 at 2 PM in Houston
August 15 is Leo, a fixed fire sign ruled by the Sun. At 2 PM Central Daylight Time the calculated rising sign is Scorpio at 25°. Try another time or city to watch it change.
