What counts as a business day
A business day is a weekday, Monday through Friday, that is not a federal holiday. Banks and federal agencies work on a calendar like this one, which is why wire transfers, check holds and shipping estimates are quoted in business days.

Federal holidays and the observed rule
There are 11 federal holidays. Some have a fixed date, others fall on a set weekday.

When a fixed-date holiday lands on a Saturday, federal offices observe it the Friday before. On a Sunday, they observe it the Monday after. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
Counting and adding business days

To add business days, the calculator moves forward one day at a time, skipping weekends and holidays. The start date itself is not counted. Five business days after Friday, December 18, 2026 is Monday, December 28, 2026, because Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25.
