Find a birth date from an age

Enter an age and the date it applies to (today by default). With years alone, the calculator gives the 12-month window in which the person was born and the possible birth years. Add months and days and it finds the exact date. The math uses the same calendar rules as the age calculator.

📌 Key facts
- From an age in whole years, a birth date falls inside a window of about 12 months.
- With years, months and days, the calculator finds the exact birth date, rarely two possible dates.
- The calculation steps back from a reference date, which defaults to today.
- A 30-year-old was born in one of two consecutive years, depending on whether the birthday has passed.
- It uses the same calendar rules as the exact age calculator.
How to work back from an age
The calculator starts at the reference date and steps back by the years, months and days you enter. Because an age in years alone covers almost a full year of possible birthdays, it searches every date for which the age calculation returns exactly the age you typed.
\[ \text{born between} \ (\text{reference} - (\text{age} + 1) \ \text{years} + 1 \, \text{day}) \ \text{and} \ (\text{reference} - \text{age years}) \]
With months, the window narrows to about a month. With months and days it shrinks to one date, rarely two when months have different lengths.
Why one year is not enough
A 30-year-old has either already had or not yet had a birthday this year, so they were born in one of two consecutive years unless you know the exact day.
| Today | Age | Birth year |
|---|---|---|
| October 30, 2026 | 30 | 1995 (after Oct 30) or 1996 (through Oct 30) |
| March 15, 2026 | 30 | 1995 (after Mar 15) or 1996 (through Mar 15) |
| December 31, 2026 | 30 | 1996 only |
On December 31, every birthday of the year has passed, so the year is unique.
When this helps
Use it to recover a birth year from an old record, check a stated age, estimate someone's generation or complete a form where only the age survives. For the reverse calculation, use the age calculator.
Birth date from age: how to use it
Here is how to work back to a birth date. First, enter the known age. Then add months and days if you have them. Next, set the reference date, which is today by default. Finally, read the window or the exact date.
- Age in years only: the window spans almost a year.
- Years and months: the window shrinks to about a month.
- Years, months and days: a single date, or two at most.
For example, a person who is 36 on October 30, 2026 was born between October 31, 1989 and October 30, 1990. So the birth year is 1989 or 1990. When you add 7 months, the window narrows to about a month.
Birth date from age: use cases and limits
This tool helps in several situations. For example, you may be filling in a family tree and know only an ancestor's age on a given date. Likewise, a record may list an age at the time of an event. In that case, you work back to the birth.
However, an age in whole years never gives a precise date. To check your result, run the age calculator with the date you found. Then measure a gap with the days between dates calculator. Finally, to shift a date, use the tool to add days to a date.
| How precise the age is | Birth window |
|---|---|
| Years only | About 12 months |
| Years and months | About 1 month |
| Years, months and days | 1 day (rarely 2) |
Birth date from age: why results vary
Two things drive the result. First, the reference date matters a lot, because the same age gives different births on different days. Second, month lengths change the window. In fact, a 28-day month and a 31-day month do not behave the same way.
Therefore, always note the date you noted the age. Without it, the math loses its meaning. Also, leap years sometimes move the edge by one day, since February 29 does not exist every year.
Birth date from age: a worked example
Suppose a form says someone is 52 on October 30, 2026. First, step back 52 years to October 30, 1974. Then widen the window by one year. So the birth date falls between October 31, 1973 and October 30, 1974. Next, add 4 months to the age: now the window shrinks to about a month. Finally, add days and you get one date.
Birth date from age: a genealogy research example
A typical case: a death record dated May 4, 1962 says the person was 71. So you want the birth. First, step back 71 years from the death date. Then widen the window by a year, because the birthday that year may not have happened. You get a birth between May 5, 1890 and May 4, 1891. Finally, cross-check with a baptism or census record to choose between the two years.
In practice, the more detail a record gives, the narrower the window. However, some sources round ages, so always keep a margin.
