How a personal or auto loan payment works

Installment loans are fully amortizing: equal monthly payments, with interest charged each month on the remaining balance.

payment = L × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n) L = amount financed, r = yearly rate ÷ 12, n = number of months

For an auto loan the amount financed is price × (1 + sales tax) − down payment − trade-in. A $30,000 car with 6% tax, $5,000 down and an $8,000 trade-in leaves $18,800 to finance.

Interest rate vs APR

The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the principal. The APR (annual percentage rate) also folds in finance charges such as an origination fee, so it is the better number for comparing lenders. When a fee is deducted from your proceeds, you pay interest on money you never receive, which pushes the APR above the stated rate.

Term length: lower payment, higher cost

A longer term lowers the payment but increases total interest. On a $25,000 loan at 8%, 60 months costs $506.91 a month; stretching to 72 months cuts the payment to about $438.33 but adds roughly $1,145 of interest. Long auto loans also raise the risk of owing more than the car is worth, so aim for the shortest term your budget allows.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a $10,000 personal loan per month?
At 10% for 36 months, about $322.67 a month. A shorter term raises the payment but lowers total interest.
What is the difference between APR and interest rate?
The interest rate covers only the cost of borrowing the principal. APR adds fees such as origination charges, so it shows the full yearly cost and is better for comparing offers.
Does the calculator include sales tax on a car?
Yes. Enter your state and local sales tax rate and it adds the tax to the price before subtracting your down payment and trade-in.
Is a longer auto loan a good idea?
It lowers the payment but costs more in interest and keeps you underwater on the loan longer. Use the shortest term you can afford.
Can I pay a personal loan off early?
Usually yes, and many lenders charge no prepayment penalty, but check your agreement. Extra payments go to principal and reduce total interest.
