IRS mileage rate and reimbursement calculator

Multiply the miles you drove by the IRS standard mileage rate for that purpose and period. For business driving, the rate was 72.5 cents per mile from January through June 2026, so 1,000 business miles equal $725. Choose the purpose and period, enter your miles, and the calculator does the math.

How the IRS mileage rate works
The IRS sets standard mileage rates each year, in dollars per mile. They stand in for the actual cost of operating a car: gas, depreciation, insurance, repairs and tires.
\[ \text{deduction or reimbursement} = \text{miles} \times \text{rate per mile} \]
| Purpose | Rate, Jan to June 2026 | Rate, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Business | 72.5 cents | 70 cents |
| Medical | 20.5 cents | 21 cents |
| Charity | 14 cents | 14 cents |
The calculator also lists the rates for the second half of 2026. Use the rate for the period when you drove.
Who can use it and what to keep
Self-employed people and small business owners can deduct business miles, and employers can reimburse employees at the IRS rate without it counting as taxable pay. Most employees cannot deduct unreimbursed business mileage on their federal return. Commuting from home to your regular workplace does not count as business mileage.
Keep a mileage log: date, start and end points, purpose and miles for each trip, plus your odometer readings at the start and end of the year.
