- A diagonal tile pattern covers the whole photo to discourage copying.
- Text size is a percentage of the image width, so the result stays in proportion from 800 to 6,000 pixels wide.
- For a portfolio, use 50 to 70% opacity in a corner; for a client proof, 25 to 40% as a tile at -30 degrees.
- Everything runs in your browser, so your images and logo are never uploaded.
What a watermark is for
A watermark is a visible mark placed on an image: your name, a website, a logo. It credits the author, discourages reuse without permission and spreads your brand when the photo is shared. It cannot make copying impossible, but removing it takes real editing work.
- Quiet corner (bottom right, 40 to 60% opacity): for a portfolio or blog.
- Diagonal tile pattern: for proofs sent to a client before payment.
- Faint centered logo: for product pictures.
Good settings by use
| Use | Position | Opacity | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portfolio, blog | Bottom-right corner | 50 to 70% | 4 to 6% of width |
| Client proof | Tile, -30° | 25 to 40% | 5 to 8% |
| Product photo | Center | 15 to 25% | logo at 30% |
Text size is a percentage of image width, so the result stays in proportion whether your photo is 800 or 6,000 pixels wide.
What this tool does and does not do
Your browser draws the watermark onto the image pixels and saves a new file. No copy is sent anywhere. If you pick JPG or WebP the image is recompressed, so keep quality at 90% or higher. Metadata such as GPS location and camera model is not copied into the new file, which is a small privacy bonus.
A watermark is weak against cropping: put it near the center, or use the tile pattern, when the image has real value.
Add watermark to photo: step by step
- Drop all your photos at once.
- Type your text, or load a PNG logo to keep the background transparent.
- Set position, opacity and size while you watch the live preview.
- Download each image, or the ZIP to grab everything in one go.
Test your setting on your lightest photo and your darkest one. Then apply it to the whole batch. If the mark disappears on a white sky, raise the opacity.
| Photo background | Watermark color | Opacity |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Dark gray | 40 to 60% |
| Dark | White | 40 to 60% |
| Busy | Tile pattern | 25 to 40% |
Real examples of how to add a watermark to a photo
You add a watermark to protect your work before you publish it. For example, a photographer sends proofs to a client with a tile pattern. After payment, the client gets clean files. That way the client can choose without using the images.
- Portfolio: your name at the bottom right, quiet but readable.
- Online shop: a faint logo in the center of each product picture.
- Blog: your site name in a corner, so you get credit if the image spreads.
- Social media: a handle at the bottom, away from the main subject.
Pair your watermark with other tools
Before you add the mark, polish the picture in the photo editor. If the image is too large, go to resize image, then compress image for a sensible file size. Need to straighten a photo? Use rotate image.
For a document, add watermark to PDF applies the same idea to every page. Finally, always keep the original without a watermark in another folder.
When you want to add watermark to photo files without ruining them, keep the text short. Then place it on a calm area of the picture. So the mark shows without getting in the way. For example, a plain sky or a wall works well. On the other hand, avoid a face or a key detail. Finally, add watermark to photo batches in one go to keep a consistent style. That way your work carries the same signature on every picture.
Also, test how the mark looks on a phone. Many people see photos on a small screen. If you add watermark to photo files for social media, use a bigger size. Plus, check the result at 100% zoom.
Last, if you add watermark to photo sets every week, save your settings in a note. Then you repeat the same look each time.
Our add watermark to photo tool also works on whole folders. Also, if you add watermark to photo files for a client, use the tile pattern.
