Why convert PNG to JPG
PNG is great for logos and screenshots but gets heavy with photos. JPG makes a photo 3 to 10 times smaller with a loss that is hard to see at 85 to 90% quality. Many websites and print shops also ask for JPG.
| JPG quality | Relative size | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 100% | 100% | Archive, print |
| 90% | about 40% | High-quality photo |
| 80% | about 25% | Website, email |
| 60% | about 15% | Thumbnail |
Transparency becomes a color
A JPG has no transparency channel, so every transparent pixel is blended with the background color you choose. For a half-transparent pixel the math is:
\[ \text{final pixel} = \text{color} \times \text{opacity} + \text{background} \times (1 - \text{opacity}) \]
A red at 50% opacity on white becomes a light pink. Pick a background close to wherever the image will be placed to avoid a visible halo.
Shrink the dimensions too
For a lighter file, cap the longest side at 2,560, 1,920 or 1,280 pixels. The tool only scales down and never enlarges. 1,920 px is enough for almost any website, and 1,280 px for a phone screen.
