To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32. For Kelvin, add 273.15 to Celsius. So 68°F is 20°C, 98.6°F is 37°C, and a 350°F oven is about 176.7°C. Type a value in any field to convert.

Temperature conversion formulas

\[ \begin{gathered} {}^{\circ}\text{C} = \dfrac{({}^{\circ}\text{F} - 32) \times 5}{9} \\ {}^{\circ}\text{F} = \dfrac{{}^{\circ}\text{C} \times 9}{5} + 32 \\ K = {}^{\circ}\text{C} + 273.15 \\ K = \dfrac{({}^{\circ}\text{F} - 32) \times 5}{9} + 273.15 \end{gathered} \]

The two scales meet at −40: −40°C equals −40°F. The Kelvin scale, used in science, starts at absolute zero (\( 0 \, \text{K} = - 273.15 \)°C) and its steps are the same size as Celsius degrees.

Oven temperatures

US recipes use Fahrenheit: 325°F is 163°C, 350°F is 177°C, 375°F is 191°C, 400°F is 204°C and 425°F is 218°C. Ovens in Europe are set in 5- or 10-degree steps, so round to the nearest 5. A convection (fan) oven usually runs 25°F (about 15°C) cooler.

3 real-life examples

1

A 350°F oven in Celsius

\( \dfrac{(350 - 32) \times 5}{9} = \) 176.7°C; set a European oven to 175 or 180°C.

2

A 101.3°F fever in Celsius

\( \dfrac{(101.3 - 32) \times 5}{9} = \) 38.5°C.

3

A 25°C day in Fahrenheit

\( \dfrac{25 \times 9}{5} + 32 = \) 77°F; in Kelvin, \( 25 + 273.15 = \) 298.15 K.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5 and divide by 9. For example, 68°F → (68 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 20°C.
How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. For example, 25°C → 25 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 77°F.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?
At −40. That is the one temperature where −40°C and −40°F are the same.
What is normal body temperature in Celsius?
98.6°F equals 37°C. A fever is generally 100.4°F (38°C) or higher.
Why do you add 273.15 for Kelvin?
Because absolute zero, 0 K, is −273.15°C. Kelvin is written without a degree sign: 300 K, not 300°K.
