Final grade calculator: what do I need on the final?
Kroma

Enter your current grade, the grade you want and the weight of the final exam. The needed score is (desired grade − current grade × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With an 88% and a final worth 25%, you need 96% to finish with a 90%. The tool also shows what each letter grade requires.

📌 Key facts

  • The score you need on the final is (desired grade - current grade x (1 - weight)) / weight.
  • With an 82% going in and a final worth 30%, you need a 92% to finish with an 85%.
  • The heavier the final, the more it can move your overall grade in either direction.
  • If the required score is above 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit.
  • Your current grade is the weighted average of the work completed so far.

The final grade formula

Your course grade is a weighted average of your grade before the final and your final exam score. If the final is worth w% of the course, the work before it is worth \( (100 - w)\% \).

\[ \text{course grade} = \text{current grade} \times (1 - w) + \text{final score} \times w \]

Solve for the final score and you get the formula the calculator uses.

\[ \text{needed score} = \dfrac{\text{desired grade} - \text{current grade} \times (1 - w)}{w} \]

Here w is written as a decimal: a final worth 25% means \( w = 0.25 \). Use your current grade as a percent, not points, and be sure the weight comes from your syllabus.

How much does the final weight matter?

The heavier the final, the more it can move your grade. With a current 85%, here is the range of possible course grades:

Final weightScore 0% on finalScore 100% on finalNeeded for 90%
10%76.5%86.5%Not reachable (135% needed)
20%68%88%Not reachable (110% needed)
30%59.5%89.5%Not reachable (101.7% needed)
40%51%91%97.5%

A low-weight final can only nudge a grade, while a heavy one can lift or sink it by a full letter.

Letter grade cutoffs used for the table

The table of letter goals uses the standard 10-point scale: A 93–100, A− 90–92, \( B + 87 \)–89, B 83–86, B− 80–82, \( C + 77 \)–79, C 73–76, C− 70–72, D 63–66 and D− 60–62. Some courses use 90/80/70/60 cutoffs with no plus or minus, or curve the final. Enter the percentage your teacher gives you as the target instead of the letter.

If the needed score is above 100%, you would need extra credit or a curve. If it is zero or negative, you have already secured the grade, but check that your syllabus has no minimum score on the final to pass.

Final grade calculator: a worked example

Say you hold an 82% and the final counts for 30%. The coursework therefore counts for 70%. You want an 85% in the class.

First, multiply your current grade by the remaining weight: 82 x 0.70 = 57.4. Next, subtract it from your goal: 85 - 57.4 = 27.6. Finally, divide by the final's weight: 27.6 / 0.30 = 92.

GoalScore needed on the final
70% (pass)42%
80%75%
85%92%
90%109% (out of reach)

Final grade calculator: how the weight changes everything

The weight of the final controls the stakes. For example, a final worth 10% barely moves your grade. A final worth 50%, in contrast, can swing it by a full letter.

So check the syllabus first. It lists the weight of every category. Then enter that number into the tool. Also, remember that some teachers drop the lowest quiz or curve the final, which changes the math.

If you do not know the exact weight, try two or three values and see how the needed score reacts.

Final grade calculator: a study plan

Once you know the target, plan your time around it. If you need a 92%, you have to aim higher than you do for a 70%.

  1. List the chapters covered by the final.
  2. Rate each one from 1 to 5 for confidence.
  3. Spend the most time on the weakest chapters.
  4. Take a timed practice test three days before the exam.

Finally, sleep well the night before. A rested mind often beats a late cram session.

Final grade math and your GPA

Your final grade feeds your GPA. So after you find the score you need, check what it means for the semester.

Use the GPA calculator to see the effect on your average. Next, run the weighted average calculator if your class uses categories. If your school reports percentages, the percent to GPA converter turns them into points. Finally, the percent change calculator shows how much a grade rose or fell.

Final grade: planning scenarios

A final grade depends on three numbers: your current grade, the weight of the exam and your goal. Change one, and the final grade you need changes too. For example, with a 75% going in and a final worth 20%, a final grade of 85% needs a 115% on the exam. That goal is out of reach.

So lower the target. A final grade of 80% needs 95% on the exam. A final grade of 77% needs 85%. Also, ask whether extra credit exists. Finally, save your final grade scenarios in a table, then compare them with your teacher's policy. Your final grade is never final until the teacher posts it, so keep checking.

3 real-life examples

1

Going from an 88 to a 90 with a final worth 25%

Needed = (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96%. You must score at least a 96 on the final.

2

Holding a B− with a final worth 30%

You have an 82 and want at least an 80. Needed = (80 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (80 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 75.3% on the final.

3

A 94 before a final worth 40%

To keep a 90: \( \dfrac{90 - 94 \times 0.6}{0.4} = \dfrac{90 - 56.4}{0.4} = \) 84%. Scoring 84 gives \( 94 \times 0.6 + 84 \times 0.4 = 90.0 \).

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Use needed score = (desired grade − current grade × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam's weight as a decimal. The calculator does this for you.
What if the score I need is over 100%?
Then the grade you want cannot be reached with the final alone. You would need extra credit, a curve or a regrade. Ask your teacher what is possible.
Where do I find the weight of my final exam?
It is listed in your course syllabus, usually as a percentage of the course grade. Common values are 10% to 30% in high school and 20% to 40% in college.
Does it work if my final is a project or paper?
Yes. Any single assignment that makes up part of your grade works the same way: enter its weight and the grade you have in the rest of the course.
Why is my needed score different from what my teacher says?
Your teacher may use points instead of percentages, a curve, dropped scores or a different grade scale. Convert your current grade to a percent that matches their system for the best match.
